speedo/tach swapping?

What model years instrument cluster will interchange (speedo/ tach) ? I have an 88.5 and the tach seems to be going south on me. jumps around and usually pegs at full tach even though the engin is idling. Anyone know if an 87 earlierf will fit? or does anyone have an 88.5 they want to part with?

Re: speedo/tach swapping?

Is that a factory or aftermarket tach? That pegging might be part of ignition misfiring...

Re: speedo/tach swapping?

Factory tach, I hadn't noticed any engine problems other than some power loss. But I had attributed that high mileage, might need to rethink my theory though.

Re: speedo/tach swapping?

My aftermarket tach does that anytime I'm running bad. Even if its fuel related. I use it as a missfire gauge
more than as a tach. Most (not all) my misfir was fuel related. I switched to U76, (gasahol) and its much
better. It rarely gets into misfireing now, unless I run some other brand gas. Even name brands like
Chevron.

It isn't misfireing to the point of rattleing. It just shows low power and loss of top speed, and sometimes
won't idle. Adding alcohol based gas line antifreeze to the other brands of gas will also help it.

Re: speedo/tach swapping?

The round vent dash type speedo clusters from the '86-'88 models don't fit the dash of the '88.5-'95 with square vents.

Re: speedo/tach swapping?-update

That's what I figured, but fortunately (or maybe not) I found out it was not my tach last nite. After thinking over the misfire idea, I started checking distributor wiring and dist. Found that when the tach would peg, the distributor would produce the gawd-awfulest schreech/squeal. Pulled the dist and found the shaft riding up and down in the housing about 3/4 inch. Going to swap it today and see if that cures the problem.
