Tips for building half doors? Rockrat?

I have a set of donor doors, and I took everything off of them. Now Im ready to start cutting, and I realized I better get some guidance before I jump into it too deep.

Is it neccessary to have the raised section at the rear where it goes back up to 'bed height'? I noticed that if that raised section isnt there, it will interfere with the latch.
When cutting, should I cut close to the bodyline, then weld new sheetmetal to connect the outside to the inside? Or should I cut higher up and fold it in to meet the inside?
Is there a write-up I can look at?

i was going to cut higher then fold over the top to meet the inside but im not to sure this would be all that easy also i dont want to have sheet metal at the bottom of the doors either so that it can give me more area to see whats under me

Re: Tips for building half doors? Rockrat?

that is the web site I based my half doors on. It really wasnst that hard to do. Here is a tip to make it easier, make it flush with the bed all the way until it slopes up to the hinges. See how in those pics how it dips down before the latch, well that was a pain in the a$s, you have an extra body line to deal with twice plus alot more metal work to do around the latch area. I am building another set and thats how I am doing it this time. In the attached pic you can see how I had to cut out the door handle area, I will fill that in like I did the key hole. It took like 2 hours to get to that point. If you have access to a brake, bending the top cap is easy. I thought about just bending over the stock sheetmetal but that seemed like more work plus I couldnt figure out how to make the bend look good. Half doors are nice, you get that doorless feeling without getting covered in mud plus it keeps your legs in if you happen to roll.

If it makes you feel better Danny, it will look better and the few inches will give you a better field of view. Its not really a pain.

Re: Tips for building half doors? Rockrat?

Sorry to jump in late, but I based my doors off the 1st web article listed. I cut mine at the body line then back up to meet the tub. that way the lock mech. would still be intact to work. I capped them with 3 pc. of metal. 9 yrs of tin knocking so it was not a big deal. I folded all the edges inside the outer door shell then tack welded all the way across so not to warp them. Then ground all the welds smooth to hide the seems.. It was time consuming but well woth the effort.. I dont think there is a right way or wrong just prefrence and experience level of the fab.. If you notice the door mech when pushed down opens the door so i tack welded a 16 penny nail, which stuck out the top then covered it with a large automotive vaccumm plug to keep from catching your arm on it...

battled with a Rock and lost 2 days after finishing them Oh well
