low gears!!!

i have decided that the 4.16 tcase kit is not enough and need to lower the gear ratio in my sammurai. i contacted tail tough ( my perfered outfitter) about the situation. and they suggested the 5.12 sidekick convesion. but in order to do that in the rear i need to change housings. bottom line is that it is goin to cost @ $850 with out shipping for the front and rear setup. what does everyone else do? how about the klune drive set up? or is there a marlin crawler type dual t case set up? or can i convert front and rear ends to something else? like toyota axles

thanks for any advice

Re: low gears!!!

You can do the Kick swap without haveing to swap rear housings. just install the gears with a can and spacer that trail toughcan supply into your zuk 3rds. The klune for the zuks are currently being redesighned unless you can find a used 1 out there..

Re: low gears!!!

You could always just buy some YUKON GEAR 5.38's. They are a direct swap into the sammi third. No hybrid stuff. I have a set and never had a problem with them.

Re: low gears!!!

Is it possible for you to purchase two kick/track third members from a local junk yard? Maybe I just got lucky, but it cost me $75 for one and $125 for another. Then I spent another $100 at petroworks for new yoke nuts, crush sleeves, and the "coffee can" that slides over the carrier. So total cost to switch to 5.12 gears was only $300. After studying what it takes to do the swap on Randys Ring & Pinion, (Thanks for all the great info, Randy!) I was able to perform the work myself. A far cry from $800! Trackers seem to be a dime a dozen here in the northeast. Hope you can come up with parts as cheaply.

Track/Kick third members in Samurai

Yes, the front kick third-members will bolt right in. However, they are made of aluminum and WILL NOT LAST if installed in the rear! The kick fronts break and also do not have the oil passage to the front pinion bearing like the zuke third-members do.
I would highly suggest that you install the kick gears in your zuke third-member. The extra $100 spent and the time required to do it right will definitely pay off in the long run. It's better to be safe, than sorry !
