Suzuki Lawsuit Lawyer on Radio Show

We heard this radio show last week and it's now archived.

George Ball, Managing Counsel for Suzuki debates the lawsuit facts with Jim Guest, President of Consumer Union.

Jim Guest was a complete jerk. He denies everything and said that Suzuki has run a "deliberate deceitful campaign to discredit" Consumers Union.

George Ball explained how it was proven that Consumer Reports rigged the rollover tests and the current status of the lawsuit.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is suing Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, over its 1988 rating of the Suzuki Samurai as “not acceptable.” Consumer Reports rating of the Samurai was based upon a driving course test, in which the publication found the risk of rollover to be unacceptable. Suzuki contends that the driving course was rigged, and that the Samurai was singled out for testing more rigorous than that given to other SUVs. Not so, says Consumers Union, who has fought a series of lawsuits filed by the Suzuki Motor Corporation since 1996. Suzuki, which makes numerous SUVs, contends that the “not acceptable” rating was not only unfair, but that it hurt sales of their SUVs overall. Consumers Union sees it as a First Amendment issue, its constitutional right as a publication in America. In May, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals cleared the suit to go to a jury trial in Santa Ana, CA. Meanwhile, Consumers Union has petitioned the Supreme Court to review the Ninth Circuit’s decision, hoping to avoid a costly jury trial. Host Larry Mantle speaks with George F. Ball, managing counsel for American Suzuki Motor Corporation and Jim Guest, President of Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine.

Too bad it can really only be won now by way of dollars and not somehow having a Samurai rebirth here in the U.S.

For those of you that have been following this "dog and pony" show, you will remember that the Sammi passed all the initial tests. When given the results the managing editor of Consumer Reports said "impossiple". "There is no way a short wheelbased high centered vehicle can pass the rollover test." That's when he himself re-tested the vehicle delibratly trying to roll it. It took him three tries to do it. If that isn't biased testing, I'll eat my swampers.

Re: Suzuki Lawsuit Lawyer on Radio Show

So if (and when) Suzuki win's the lawsuit, do you really think they will start importing the Samurai (or Jiminy) again?
That would be really cool!

I think that is wish full thinking.
It would be nice to get the sami back.
But I don't think it will happen.

Re: Suzuki Lawsuit Lawyer on Radio Show

well how bout not getting the samurai back, since suzuki has stoped producing 2 door vitara (track/kick), and the 2 door has always been in their line up why not just bring the jimny but with a new name, since the new model looks more like the vitara now than the old samurai why not just call the sami the new 2 door vitara.
