Smallest lift to run 31\'s???

Ok Here is my question. I just bought a 91 2wd sammy for my daily driver. I would like to run 31 11.50's and backspace the wheels about 2.5. This vehicle will not be off-roaded. I just want her to look a little tougher. What is the smallest lift I can run. Rubbing won't be a problem since I will not be flexing the suspension, as long as it doesn't rub under normal driving. I also want the lift the be low cost. I was thinking about spoa spring perches without the whole kit, but I don't have use of a welder. Does Calmini sell just the bolt on spoa perches, and what keeps the axle from rotating under heavy acceleration? I also wonder how strong that front axle is to weld to, since it really is just a hollow axle. Does anyone have pics of this type of set up mostly frontal views of how the 2.5 backspacing will look on 31's. Sorry for the long post.

I have a 2" body lift and run 32" mongrels. you could do a 1-2" body lift. wouldn't require welding and is very cheap.

heres a pic of mine sitting on the 32's with only a 2" body lift and stock suspension.

i would say you need at least 3" lift. the cheapest way would be 1" shackle lift and 2" body lift and some fender triming.

i've got 31" mud tires on backspaced wheels with only a 2" body lift. No rubbing at all, even at full flex (stock springs). I did have to cut off the front bumper brackets and pound the inner wheelwells flat with a BF hammer, but that only took about 10 minutes.

I ran a set of 31" BFG long trail TAs with just a 2" Calmini shackle reverse.

Re: Smallest lift to run 31\'s???

Spamurai,do you have a pic of your zook. One of the reasons I'm asking is because the calmini 5 inch lift runs 31's tallest which would mean that anything smaller would rub. I had a sammy with 33's spoa 3inch body lift and longer shackles. I think I had too much lift for a daily driver but off-road I was able to stuff the poop out of them. Since this new rig is on road only I just want it to look nicer

Re: Smallest lift to run 31\'s???

dont forget you get different clearance issues with different kinds of suspension. A shackle reverse causes the front wheel to move rearward during compression, so your rubbing would be at the back of the front wheelwells.

My YJs on M/Ls go up and forward so the rubbing happens at the front of the wheelwell.

Just for a reference: I am running 30" mud tires on stock BS wheels and the YJ setup gives about 2" of lift. I rub on the outer seam of the front wheelwells and the square part behind the headlights when driving offroad or even cornering hard on the road. I have a set of 31s on 2" BS wheels that rubbed while I was just driving slowly on flat ground with this setup.

Likewise, when I had the calmini 2" s/r installed I had the same 31x10.50s on std backspace wheels and they rubbed all over the place, even on the road, worst of all catching on the springs at full lock.
