Simex Tires?

in a recent thread about hi steer, LArry asked about the tires on the truck. I read the sidewalls and did some hunting around on the web and found out they are "Simex Jungle Trekkers"

I found this website with sizes and pictures of the tread for several different models of tire offered by Simex, but I don't know much else about them. They seem to be popular in GB and other places beside the USA.

Does anyone know if they are ever imported to the USA? They may not be DOT certified or something. I think swampers are illegal for road use in the UK, so maybe its the same thing in reverse. I think I also read they are kind of expen$ive.

Any info or experiences would be interested to me and probably others on this BBS.

thanks,

~daxe

Re: Simex Tires?

Found a TIRE COMPANY in FL that lists them. DOT approved and all the specs but have to send a request for pricing.

Re: Simex Tires?

Yeah I found out about them 2 years ago when I worked at 4WPPC .. I looked into it then, but found nothing, at least of the extreme offroad tires being able to be imported .. though I havent checked since then.

The Extreme Trekker was my choice of tire, but it just isnt wide enough, 11.5 is the widest available for 33 and 35 heights

Re: Simex Tires?

Quite a lot of guys over here in New Zealand run Simex Extreme Trekkers. They are OK, with fairly aggresive side lugs, but I don't really rate them that highly. Personally I'd rather have swampers or boggers.
As DougO said, they are quite narrow for the height.

Quite a few guys also use swampers, and they seem to go a bit better IMO.

Funny thing is the Simexes are cheap here compared to Interco tyres. I suspect lots more people would use boggers if they weren't $800NZ for 1 31"!!! Thats an average weeks wages for one tyre. I'd get some if they were more affordable. If you convert the currency they should only be $295 ea, so someones shafting us.

The simexes are also street legal here.

You guys have it good with easy access to nice cheap interco tyres and all the other vendor-made goodies over there. I'll have to move over there one day just to build a nice zook!
