RUST! UGH! (fender flare hangers)

Well I took my fender flares off and I knew that behind them the metal hanger edges had come apart from the fender wells. The rear two are nearly falling off. How much trouble is it to just remove the metal flare hangers and cut out all the rust? Is there laws that say you have to have some kind of flares? I would eventually get some but right now money is too tight. I could probably makes some from that lawn edging stuff real cheap.

Can I just drill out those little tack welds and remove those things? All they do is harbor dirt and water and make the rust worse. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I have no idea about your state, but in Maine we have to have the tire tread covered at all times. Here are some pics of mine, I cut mine back about 4” and used lawn edging for flares, I think they came out OK, but mine is used about 90% for wheeling. As to cutting out just the spot welds, mine were so rusted I couldn’t find the spot welds, so I just cut everything.

I ended up just prying and banging mine off. I'll shape them up tomorrow with the trusty sawzall or jig saw. I may flat fender up the front and shape the back maybe like this /-\ to keep that square shape the Zook has. Thanks for the pics! Man those things were wasted with rust bad!

Re: RUST! UGH! (fender flare hangers)

I like that, simple and a nice job. I did mine a little differently for 3 main reasons: 1) I didn’t think of doing it that way, 2) I didn’t want any sandwiched metal or places water would rust it out again (I welded in one strip of metal, 5” wide, jacked into place) 3) I enlarged the ends where the chains kept catching and “scuffing” the body. But, I also didn’t care about aesthetics, the welds look just fine to me.
