Help me invent something....

OK... let me paint the picture here.

When I change my gear oil, I have the gallon bottle and the plastic pump that screws onto the top, and a clear hose running from that to the filler hole.

99% of the time one thing happens:
The hose falls out of the gearbox
The pump comes unscrewed from the bottle
The bottle tips over while pumping.

What I'd like to do is make a little electric pump, maybe similar to a window washer sprayer but on a grander scale. Some sort of resivour that I could fill up with oil, set on the ground and run a tube up to the filler hole, switch the pump on and then all I'd have to do is hold the tube in the filler, and switch it off when it was full.

I'm stuck on what to use for a pump. Any ideas?

How about this?:

You would have to use it in reverse, but it might be what you're looking for.

Or maybe this:

Re: Help me invent something....

How about using one of those little 12V pumps for pumping fuel into an RC airplane? Sounds like it would be exactly what you're looking for. You basically take a couple pieces of plastic tubing...one end goes into the fuel, other end into the pump. Then take the output from the pump and plug it into wherever you want the fuel to go. Flip a switch and it sucks the fuel out of the bottle and pumps it into the plane. Fairly cheap too.

Re: Help me invent something....

The viscosity of gear lube might prove to be too viscous for a small pump to effectively pump.....

Murph, I've found that a suction gun works pretty well in filling up the drivetrain.........

Ha, good idea on that air powered suction gun, seems it'd work real well. There's your answer

Re: Help me invent something....

well the first post got lost in space

the pump i use has a wire on the end that self-adjust to the hole. never had a problem

but here is hat you can do

take a container plumb in a cutoff valve and a male air hose end make sure you turn your regulator down to a max of 5lbs. make sure the gear lube is at the bottom with a filler hose coming out and the air on top and it will push it out

Re: Help me invent something....

Murph, I use a hand pump in a 5 gallon bucket. 5 gallons cost $12.00 (cheaper when you buy quanity) and hand pump $17.00. Pump includes round metal lid and thumbscrews to hold it on and pump is premium quality. The hose has a metal u shape tube to fit into diffs. A few pumps and your done, very easy and less messy.

I have one of these laying around I've been tempted to try. It has male garden hose fittings on it though.
