those of you who have had tranny bearings go out ?

Hi all I am helping a friend out on his samurai.

who have had the transmission bearings go out?

1) specifically the rear out put bearing, what are the
symptoms of it going out?

my friend has his stick shifter vibrating a little,

I have checked the tranny mount, and it seems like it is good, also I have checked the motor mounts and they seem still attached and not ripped. also the t-case mounting arms are straight.

2) when I reach up and hold the intermediate shaft where
it goes into the tranny and there is a little play up
and down, not the ujoint. is that normal?

there is no leaking of fluid.

3) When that rear bearing is going out, will that cause
any vibrations to translate into the t-case shifter?

4) one other question, if the throwout bearing is going
out, will that cause any vibrations?

5) any other input on the transmission bearing going out,
not just the rear one, but the front one and other ones
in the tranny, will be greatly appreciated

I did a search on several things last night and could not find much on the tranny bearings and symptoms.

thanks all in advance for your help

Re: those of you who have had tranny bearings go out ?

Rich, I've replaced bearings in the tranny several times. Once the bearings in the countershaft and several times the input shaft bearings. I had a rear seal that leaked. Had to replace the extension case bushing and Suzuki no longer sales this but can be purchased at a transmission shop. The rear bearing in the ext. case is 09262-25073 and the one in the rear main case is 09262-30086. More than likely the input bearings are out. The two required are 09262-28005 and 09263-20056 from Suzuki. Bearing suppliers can match up your old bearings with new much cheaper, or try your local tranny shop. The intermediate shaft will have some movement. Check and replace the pilot bearing in the flywheel while your at it. Robert

The extension housing bushing does wear and will cause the intermediate shaft to wobble a bit, causing a small vibe. According to the FSM, it is not replaceable. However, Roadless Gear does carry them. Give Figmo or Lora a call.....

Re: those of you who have had tranny bearings go out ?

The countershaft bearing in the rear housing of my tranny went. Made a helluva screatching noise every couple 100meters, sounded like there was gravel inside when reversing.
I thought my original tranny was bad, so I put this one in. Turned out the original one didn't have a problem.
Anyways, the original is back in. Took the bad one apart, and saw that the bearing had no ball reatiner left. It was sitting in pieces at the bottom. The only damage to the gears was a chiped tooth.

Hmm..
Every Zuk I've been in has had a noisy tranny.Ive also heard that in one case even driven off the showroom floor the tranny was loud/gravel sounding.Mine's been like that for 3yrs and no problem, but I do have a back-up handy in case.
