HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

OK, so it was funny at first reading some posts and responses, but no more. I'm not gonna name names (don't wanna get blackballed from Hop Sing's ) but you know who you are. How hard is it to type correctly? Not hard! I just got through reading someone's response and for the two paragraphs written, I understood maybe a sentence at most. Brutal and laughable to be quite honest. Actually, it's quite sad because when I read stuff like that it makes me wonder: how well do you converse in person? I don't want to shame anyone but if you're going to take the time to answer a question, take the time to use punctuation, Upper case letters, and the English language....you're wasting my time and everyone elses when you DON'T! Does this bother anyone else or is it just me...

Cheers,
Steve

LOL I know what you mean, I feel like crap myself. I left work to come home and chill out. Guess that's what put me over the edge to write that post

Re: HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

Damn pushy Canucks.

First, understand most here don't speak or write English in the US, instead Americana, or "'Mercan", is used. Phonics and Ebonics are recognized and promoted. I think the name of the lanuguage should be changed to "American" from "English", since the language doesn't belong to them anymore. With that...

Yo, ya thinks ya can be a l'il mo cool wit da homies? Come in here diss'n da way we rap and all, chit, ya actin likes it some spellin' bee. If watcha sayin is phat, then say it whateva way yous want. Betta to fizzle wit da snizzle than kizzle the jizzle. Word to the muthas.

Eh?

Re: HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

It drives me crazy, too, Steve. I have learned to overlook it, though. I overlook it so much that I don't even bother to fix my typos anymore. I can type very correctly if I choose, but it's just not worth the effort.

My main concern with bad spelling is that it's useless for searches.

Total lack of punctuation is more confusing for me than bad spelling.

Re: HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

the worst is when people use no punctuation or sentence structure when they type and the sentences just seem to go on forever and it seems impossible to understand what they are saying when they are typing and i notice this all of the time and see that happen a whole lot of times on the bbs when i was first here it was amazing to me to see my shoes are too big for my hat i am spoa now and will be running cj springs in the front with missing links and yj springs in the back

Re: HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

I agree that American and English are not the same. I lived in England for two years and consider myself bi-lingual.

I also understand that there are several members that are not American and for some, "English"; is a second language so I try to overlook grammar errors. On the other hand, it drives me crazy when people don't know the difference between:

then and than
there, and their
you're and your
two, to , and too

and so on.

When spell checkers aren't available (like now) I open a word processor to write my post. Then, I copy and paste.

And last, but not least (I got a kick out of this):

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer inwaht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is tahtthe frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh?!

Re: HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

It doesn't really bother me either way. Sometimes I'll type KOko instead of Koko. I'm not going to check my "i" before "e"'s and all that other good stuff. I've never had a problem reading posts on this board, but thats me.

Re: HEY! LEarn to spell!!!

LOL I like that one Jonald!

I have to say, I can appreciate hemo's issue, But for some, its keyboard dyslexia. (me, I have to deal with
5 different keyboards, my mind and fingers are on different time lines, and I'm not a touch typist to begin.)
And for some, they are probably spelling as well as they can. This board has people from all walks of life
and some just might not have your spelling skills, for whatever reason. Cut them some slack. The
important thing is the are participating. Why make them feel self conscious? Or would you rather only
"qualified" spellers participate? I'm glad to see them trying, especially when so many don't.

Engineers for example, are very well educated, but something in the typical engineers mindset makes them,
as a group, poor spellers, and have little appreciation for sentence structure. The point is, few people have
superlative writing/spelling skills, And some (many?) that do pride themselves on writing as obscurely as
possible, while using words few will understand, even in context. This does not help convey the message.
Thankfully I don't see too much of that here, so were spared that sort of arrogance. And that's without
even considering the English as second language issues.

My own writing has evolved over the years. It will probably still evolve, but to evolve takes time and
experience.

I do agree the subject needs to have correct spelling for searches. Some effort should be made here.

Overall Hemo, and others of like concerns, I think we all can make efforts to be better at this, but if you
don't practice and participate, that won't happen. Try to have some understanding and consideration.
