It was all going so well..

Last week I had a new driveway put in (it's been a long time working on gravel or old busted concrete) and since it's SO NICE decided it's time to dry up the drips last night I replaced a collapsed motor mount, put in a new valve cover gasket (scrape scrape), and (drumroll......) replaced the crank seal. It was all going so well, figured out the combination for getting the valve cover on/off, everything came off the front of the zuke easily, and even using the breaker bar on the frame method to break the crank pulley nut worked great. I discovered I had the wrong type of puller for the pulley but it didn't slipped right off! sweet. Since it was this far apart and I've been hearing a noise at idle that I thought was alternator bearings I decided to pull it and take to a rebuild shop without thinking further I put the 10mm wrench on the nut to remove the positive wire and touched the bracket with it...causing sparks at the wrench and a plume of smoke at the positive terminal of the battery that I forgot to disconnect hmmmmm....wonder what that smoke was...hope it wasn't the red top frying.

Anyway, took the alternator to the shop, he tested it quick and said all is the noise might be waterpump? So tonight I put it all back together just as nice as you please, not a single extra 10mm nut or bolt , even changed oil and filter just because... jump in to fire it up and nothing. not even a dash light. Smoke= Fusible link. After 8. Not gonna run tonight.

I can work a wrench pretty good but the electrons get me every time..what a dummy

Sorry to hear that! But before you swap out your water pump, try another timing belt tensioner (if you have one laying around). They're much easier to replace than a water pump, and sound very much the same when they start to go bad. HTH
