4WD stopped working

88 Samurai

I went off-roading just a couple of days ago and the 4WD wouldn't work. I have the manual hub locks. I took a look under hte vehicle with someone inside trying to drive in 4WD and the driveshaft is turning but nothing is happening. I think that it might be that the spring on one of the hubs isn't releasing properly. One of the hubs is not turning as easily as it use to. Just in case I am wrong does anyone else have any ideas on what else the problem could be. Like I stated, it just stopped working... one day it did and the next it didn't. In that time period between there was no noticeable noises, nothing cluncked.

Re: 4WD stopped working

sounds like your hubs are just full of rust and dirt. easy to clean up. figure around an hour per side, and then you'll be thrilled to learn that it only took 45 mins to do the whole job. needs it every couple of years to keep it working smoothly.

Re: 4WD stopped working

If either of your lockout hubs are not engaging you won't have front wheel drive. The spring inside the hubs can come off or it can even rust to where the gear does not engage. I had to take the GOOD hub off the other side to compare the placement of the springs and gear to re-assemble one of mine that had come apart. I could tell that it had been taking on water around the gasket for quite a while and it had a lot of rust on all the parts. The other side looked factory new and shiny inside. I just bought a 1988.5 for my brother that had the lockout gear and spring both in the glovebox and the owner said it had just stopped working. I had another hub that was disassembled and put together enough parts to get it working again. Sounds like your lockout hub needs checked out.
