As for some of what I have read, I am not looking to make enemies but RTFM.
I too, once thought a dictionary was the definitive. I think this tendency to hold anything written as sacred without fully exploring the entire texts came from my youth where one book was drilled into my head as the definitive. I don't own Oxford's dictionary, but among the several articles in the beginning of my American Heritage Dictionary, a point is made:
___This dictionary serves as a tool that assists one in
___undersanding unfamiliar words and assists in the proper
___use of the language at the time of being published.
Obviously, if we were not aloud to make up new words, we would cram more meanings into our current crop. We already have far too many words like this.
And as for a dictionary ignoring fads - How then would you look up antiques?
When I go to google and search for something, one of the first things google does is compair the word(s) to a dictionary. If it didn't, I would only get back a list of the uninformed few who, like me, had the misfortune of mispelling the exact same word. Anyone who has mispelled Samurai knows this.
Zoot suit? Pop fly? Howdy? Edh?
Sure, you and I have heard of them, we might even be able to spell them, but what about the guy or gal 50 years in the future? What about the people we wish "would learn English"? How hard would it be to read English books if the Dictionary was so crippled and limited? (Especially if English is not your first language)
Just because a word is no longer used or is not part of your social class' dialect does not bar it from being spoken. I know I have felt snubbed when someone starts speaking queen's english to me to somehow establish their education - It really anger's me. It is elitism and it sucks.
Furthermore, Oxford University isn't even "American", it's in the U.K.
Now let's get back to Samurais.
