Re: Important announcement regarding bling bling

Im not disin dialecs just the loose terms that some people try to pass off as proper speach,, I am by no means a literary perfctionist and I could use a little help my self at times.. But I dont see how slang should be taught or excepted as the AMERICAN language BRO. It starts at home with the some so called Parents, you let your child get away with murder guess what they are goint to be one, You let your child speak incorrectly, and let them feel they have a right too and are owed everything they become usless, uneducated zits on the american a$$ that couldnt contribute to society if they tried. There is a certain accountability that has been lost through out the years and those of us that teach are children RESPECT and accountability for there actions are a dieing breed...There needs to be alittle more A$$ kickin in the homes off america without the fear of big brother taking your chidren away for simple disaplinary measures and no Im not saying smack your kids around just do what is right... Having chidren is not a right but a privlage and the privalige comes with high expectations, by not only the ones around you but the children themselves, LOVE your children and teach them respect comes at at high price, It is not given or taken...

I don't think there is anyone who would ever disagree with you with this.

Think how funny it will be in fifty years when somebody opens up the most respected dictionary, The Oxford English Dictionary, and sees bling-bling.

In light Rockrat your rant could be summed up easily with one ghetto term... Hollllllaaaaaa!

In the interest of intelect, I grin.

Rant On | Runon On | Spellcheck Off

As for some of what I have read, I am not looking to make enemies but RTFM.

I too, once thought a dictionary was the definitive. I think this tendency to hold anything written as sacred without fully exploring the entire texts came from my youth where one book was drilled into my head as the definitive. I don't own Oxford's dictionary, but among the several articles in the beginning of my American Heritage Dictionary, a point is made:

___This dictionary serves as a tool that assists one in
___undersanding unfamiliar words and assists in the proper
___use of the language at the time of being published.

Obviously, if we were not aloud to make up new words, we would cram more meanings into our current crop. We already have far too many words like this.

And as for a dictionary ignoring fads - How then would you look up antiques?

When I go to google and search for something, one of the first things google does is compair the word(s) to a dictionary. If it didn't, I would only get back a list of the uninformed few who, like me, had the misfortune of mispelling the exact same word. Anyone who has mispelled Samurai knows this.

Zoot suit? Pop fly? Howdy? Edh?

Sure, you and I have heard of them, we might even be able to spell them, but what about the guy or gal 50 years in the future? What about the people we wish "would learn English"? How hard would it be to read English books if the Dictionary was so crippled and limited? (Especially if English is not your first language)

Just because a word is no longer used or is not part of your social class' dialect does not bar it from being spoken. I know I have felt snubbed when someone starts speaking queen's english to me to somehow establish their education - It really anger's me. It is elitism and it sucks.

Furthermore, Oxford University isn't even "American", it's in the U.K.

Now let's get back to Samurais.

Re: Important announcement regarding bling bling

Interesting and thought provoking rant, sponge, but I take issue with this:

>>I know I have felt snubbed when someone starts speaking queen's english to me to somehow establish their education - It really anger's me. It is elitism and it sucks

someone gratuitously using big words to make themself sound well-bred or well-educated is pretty obnoxious, for sure.

That said, having to make an effort to dumb down ones ability to speak articulately and correctly in order for people too stupid or lazy to learn to speak correctly sucks too. If I know a perfectly good English word that expresses some nuance of what I'm thinking or feeling and you don't know it, then the shortcoming isnot with me.

In other words, when did catering to the lowest common denominator ever elevate ANYTHING to a greater level? In the first part of your rant you defended the addition of new words, but at the end of your rant you defended your right to not understand what's being said to you. Which is it?

It goes both ways. Just because someone is more educated than you and has greater of speech doesn't mean they shouldn't be saying those words, either.

Wow!

The Oxford Dictionary offer a tip 'o the hat one of my favorite fictional characters (and the show named after him) with the inclusion of "blipvert" (a very short sumbliminal television commercial).

The Oxford Dictionary salutes you, Max Headroom!
