Update on funky engine noise

On my last post I told about a noise coming from the engine on the side with the water pump and the alt.

I have driven my Samurai for about 2 weeks now with no ill side effects because of the noise. I have checked the alt. bracket and it is fine. I wiggled and waggled on the clutch fan and it does not budge. The fluid level to the radiator is fine and the Samurai runs cool even in HEAVY traffic. I have checked the pulleys and they are not loose as far as I can tell. The belt is not rubbing against the timing belt cover. I am really at a loss here.

I thought it might be the water pump, and maybe it still is, but there is no leakage and no signs of the pump going bad.

One question, could it be something IN the alt. itself? Is there a bearing etc that could be going bad in the alt?

Or it could just be that this is the natural sound the engine makes. It has been awhile since I bought it and I can not remember what the engine sounded like when I bought it.

Oh well any other ideas or opinions? Like I say it has no ill effects on the Samurai it is just annoying. If you need to know the sound it sounds like rocks in a dryer.

Anyone near North Carolina want to ride by and take a listen? I just don't want to take it to a shop because I can't afford to right now.

Remove the alt belt and run the engine. If the sound goes away its the alt. Try the same experiment with the water pump.

Re: Update on funky engine noise

Thanks for the reply I may give it a shot on Saturday if it doesn't rain or if it does.

I just had the alt. replaced but then again the first one they put on was defective, so this one may be also.

If the noise goes away when I take off the belt what do you think it might be?

Re: Update on funky engine noise

both the alt and the water pump are driven by the same belt. that test will only tell you if the problem lies
withing the alt, WP or any of the pullys.

Is it possible you are mistakeing pinging (detonation) for a vibration?
