88.5 tach is not Plug&Play for a 1994 Sammy

Nope. Don't work. Nada.

After tracing the board and seeing what went where, it was all screwy. What was the oil pressure on the 88.5 is the Check Engine on the 94. What was the turn signal common on the 88.5 was the oil pressure on the 1994.

While all seems fine when you plug it in, almost none of the idiot lights go to the correct sensors.

Also, the 88.5 uses a mileage counter to activate the check engine light at 60K intervals. The 94 uses a VSS to help manage the EFI. This is not good for plug&play.

Anyhoot, after swapping the speedos and moving wires from here to there, all is well and working perfectly.

Did we take pics? Did we write down what we did?

Hellsno. Mad dash to the GonZookin finish line right now.

But, for the record, the 88.5 tach dash is not plug and play for EFI, at least not in a 1994-5.

I'm not sure what model my cluster came out of (88.5 +) but it all worked perfect in my '94. Pluged it in and everything shows to be working as should be. As far as the check engine light intevals i'm not to concerned about it. Have been running it for a year and all is well. Maybe I got lucky and got one from a newer model.

I didn't have any compatibility problems running an '88.5 tach cluster in my '93 with EFI.

I did have problems similar to those you described when I tried to use an '87 wiring harness with a 88.5 cluster. The circuitry was just different enough to make things not work correctly.

Might just be 94-95. They did have a different FSM for them.

But do understand, there was no drivability issues, not idiot lights going off on mine. It wasn't until we went to install the VSV, which is needed to manage fuel correctly in a EFI, did we notice the difference in wiring.

When I would start up, all the idiot lights came on normal, and went out when they should. But fact was in my case that the idiots didn't match up.

Sooo, that being said, and unless everyone did an exhaustive comparison of the two dashes before they swap, I bet my bottom dollar that there are folks out there running a 88.5 tach dash in EFI Sammies, and because it runs and nothing is a problem, assumes all is well.

I assumed it was okay, until now.
