VW D Mileage

Glen recently drove back home from Texas with his new VW diesel engine. I am wondering what kind of fuel milage with your engine gear tire setup and trailer. You stated it had power to spare with heavy load so even close to stock milage would be great.

Re: VW D Mileage

With a trailer in tow, I think I averaged about 23-25MPG. Now with the 32" Swampers on (about 5-5.5" of lift), I'm averaging somewhere just over 25MPG. Keep in mind I have the 1.9TD which doesn't do as well in mileage as the 1.6TD. I also have our Zuks weighed down with alot of junk most others don't have, so its a heavier vehicle. My style of driving is also not condusive to good mileage. I'm always pushing the speed as fast as I can.

Re: VW D Mileage

When i was living in europe, i had the very same 1,9 TDI in my audi 80 (Audi 4000) and i got nearly 20 km per liter, i guess the extra weight of the audi is easily compensated by the "better" aerodynamics of the sami... )

better = better than a barn )

bye all

Thanks that sounds good for a sami set up for the off road with heavy load.

Re: VW D Mileage

I have put many miles on my '89 Jetta 1.6 diesel, getting near 50 mpg on the highway. It never got less than 41 or 42 around town. The odometer is broken, so I don't know how its doing now, but it is well past 200K miles. My only concern about the diesel in a Samurai would be gearing. These motors do not like high rpms. They pull best from 1500 to 3000rpm. Sustained rpms over 4500 will blow it up in no time. The Samurai, with correct gearing, should be near a stock Jetta in mpg. The Jetta weighs a little more than a stock Samurai.
