Anyone running 31s w/ stock gearing?

She's SPOA with 33s right now but these rims and tires will be going on my LWB Sam. Also running a 1.6, and 5.12 gears, but these also will be going in the LWB. The intent is to sell the SWB, with the 1.3 and stock axle gearing from the LWB in the SWB. Everyone confused yet? Anyhow, I can get a deal on a set of 31" tires, which will sell the the SWB easier than with the 205s, especially since it is SPOA. But I'm wondering how the 31s will do with the 1.3 and stock gears.

It's do-able.

I've been running 31's and stock gears for around 2 years now. Forget using 5th gear unless your drafting behind someone or you have a strong tail wind. Off-road you will find yourself using 4low all the time.

Like I said it can be done but you'll be much happier when you re-gear.

Re: Anyone running 31s w/ stock gearing?

I have a 6" lift and 31" on 10" rims. I never use 5th unless I'm running in low range and I spend a lot of hiway time in 3rd if the wind is not in my favor or a little hill comes along. I turn 50 mph @ about 4000 rpms in 3rd. If I had the power to get into 5th I could do 100 mph.

Hope this helps - Larry

if you selling it, who cares?
let the buyer worry about whether or not the gears are good enough...

Re: Anyone running 31s w/ stock gearing?

Good point. However, I'd like to get as much as possible when I sell, and if some kid comes along to test drive it and can't get into 5th gear, he may decide not to buy. There's a lot of people out there who don't know the ins and outs of a Samurai, and may think it will be too much trouble or too costly to get it set up right. That being said, I'll probably keep it like this and take my chances. Thanks for the input.
