axle oil seal repeat offender

The rear right side axle oil seal on my 88 samurai has blown again for the second time in six months. This seems a little excessive, since everything on my vehicle is stock. Is this a common problem? What might be causing this? a nicked seal surface or maybe something more sinister; the left side makes a deep rubbing noise periodically that I havent been able to track down. Should I bother trying to track down the problem, or should I just replace the whole axle and be done with it.

Thanks in advance

Re: axle oil seal repeat offender

I had that happen to my 87 sami. The seal I took out fit real tight in the tube and the auto parts store replacement which was a victor fit less tight. What I did the second time was degrease the seal area of the tube and put in a 1/8 inch bead of RTV. Let the RTV cure for :10, then put in the seal. No problems in over 2 years.

Re: axle oil seal repeat offender

Sounds like you might have a bent axle housing. This will cause the axle to spin in a very slight oval pattern and wears seals out quickly. You may not feel it in the vehicle since there's springs and shocks buffering the small wobble. It could be hard to diagnose though if the bend is very slight.
