Oil smells like gas!

Dipstick reaks of gas. Anyone know what causes this, or what kind of things I should check to narrow down the problem?
TIA,
Jason

Re: Oil smells like gas!

Fuel pump is bad. it will leak gas into the bottom end, You most likly have oil dripping from the drain pipe on it too.
Change your oil asap, and replace the fuel pump.
(gas in oil will cuase rapid wear.
Othe possiblity is carb problems. how is it running?
If it is okay other than that I would suspect the fuel pump.

Glenn is right! I had the same problem not too long ago, and replaced my fuel pump (took about 10mins) and changed out oil/filter and runs great now! It was $22 for mine, but I've got a small V6 so it might be less if you still run the 1.3l.?

Re: Oil smells like gas!

Ever seen on those engine oil cleaner products, they say "do not drive with this stuff in the engine". Heheh, that's what you are doing now! Your oil is now like 5w-10 lol!
Look at the fuel pump breather (the only pipe sticking out the back side with no hoses on it), see if it is dirtied by oil or if it has oil driping out of it.
Shoot, a bad one will drain an engine of oil in about 2 hours!
Very bad if that fuel pump goes bad, replace/resolve your problem quickly!
minaswell change your pcv valve and clean all the crap out of the pcv hose system.

Re: Oil smells like gas!

Whoa! Sounds like I've got a prob that needs to be fixed soon! It's a 1.3L. It's been driving fine since I noticed it a couple months ago, although it feels a little underpowered (relatively). I had replaced the fuel pump about 10K ago, but will definitely check that breather for signs. Good tip on the PCV valve, I know that hasn't been changed out for about 50K.

Re: Oil smells like gas!

If you've been driving it that long that way and noticed a lack of power , you are going to need a lot more than a fuel pump or pcv . Rings , bearings , crank ......

Re: Oil smells like gas!

Seems a quick visual may not work or be 100% accurate, if you're unsure of the visual results, get a 1 litre bottle and tape it or put it right under/in that vent tube (it'll catch oil). Run the samurai for a few minutes or until you see oil coming out of there.
