Larger gas tank?

I would like to add install a larger gas tank on the Sami.
I drive about 120 miles a day, 5 days week and I'm getting tired of going to the gas station.

Thanks in advance,
Shawn

Thanks,
Shawn

Re: Larger gas tank?

The only large capacity tank I've ever seen was on an Aussie website
(www.grpauto.com.au/index.htm).It doesn't seem like there's any extra room
for a larger tank without sacraficing ground clearance.

Re: Larger gas tank?

I've got a 16 gal gas tank.....it works great! and there is NO clearance loss...infact, the bottom is something like 1/4 inch thick....so it is tough too! I can Email ya some pics if ya want.....just let me know! Oh, and I love the extra range it gives me.....10 gal is not nearly enough!

Re: Larger gas tank?

Andy,

You're my hero. I originally drove my '94 Sami as a daily ride. From Jan '94 to Dec. '96,I drove 120K miles. There were many 400-500 miles work days. And Mobil Speedpass and Pay-At-The-Pump were unknown. 10 gals. at a pop just plain sucks.

Well, my rig (as it is now) don't commute any more, but will soon be making a direct line from my house to Moab, pulling a trailer to boot. A 16 gal. tank would be, well, t!ts. If you could let me know where to find/buy one that would be great. If you could post a photo, link, or anything on how to get one for everyone, you would be heralded as a savior (at least to me)

Tim

Re: Larger gas tank?

Andy,
Are you going to let us all know where you got the 16 gallon fuel tank from?

Re: Larger gas tank?

I am currently making a 21 gallon tank because I have the same dilemma. I'm using a 25 gal. drum with 3 inches taken off the side. the flat part goes on the top, it straps to the body, and uses the expansion tank, sender and fittings from the old tank. It's 28 inches long and will be 13 inches high. the exhaust has to be rerouted though. Mine will stack up the side. I will have pics on my site once I get it up. It's also heavier gauge metal, and will of course have it's own custom skid plate. By the way, I drive 110 miles a day and I know what a drag it is filling up all the time.

Re: Larger gas tank?

Hey Shawn,
Be careful that you don't make it TOO big! There was a guy in my club in SoCal that had a tank custom fab'd........I think it was 22 or 23 gal. He wound up eating up rear springs because of the weight. Gasoline isn't light! They kept sagging badly. I think he routed the exhaust out infront of the rear wheel. He wound up only filling it up for long trails or extended camping weekends.

Re: Larger gas tank?

Thanks for the info on the sag problem. I will definitely take this into consideration. Maybe I'll stack another leaf or search the junkyards (my favorite hangout) and look for a suitable donor. Your right though, gas ain't light, but the more you got, the further you go!
