bumper modifications?

As I was reading a feature article about the Spidertrax wheel spacers, I saw pics of a sidekick that appeared to have the plastic/styrofoam bumper covers removed, leaving what appeared to be the inner, steel bumper visible. For reference, look at http://www.off-road.com/suzuki/reviews/traxspacers.htm and look at the white 'kick and tell me if this is indeed what has been done. If so, has anyone else done this? I was not aware that this could be done and think it looks more appealing than the cheap plastic bumpers (and less costly than purchasing aftermarket bumpers).

Thanks for any input!

Re: bumper modifications?

Well, I answered my own question last night. Yes, you can easily take off the plastic covering and styro from the steel bumper beneath. The resulting look is definitely more aggressive and less car-like. The steel bumper is painted a gloss black and looks great as-is. Does not offer any increased crash protection like an aftermarket bumper may do, but it could surely serve as a good interim bumper before you shell out $200 on a tube bumper or something!
