Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

Does anyone know of any successful conversions of a Samurai hard top (non-removable) to convertible or removable hard top or large sunroof (picture the safari vehicles in Africa)? This is primarily a tow vehicle, trail explorer and neighborhood driver, not extreme off road.

Re: Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

I'v seen tintops that have been cut down to convertables, but without any kind of convertable top.

I'v been tossing around the idea of getting a sliding ragtop for my rig. They look nice and would be unique in a tintop. The draw back is they are a little exspensive.

Re: Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

Hi,

Welcome to the board! I"m converting my tintop to a 'vert but I'm swapping the whole tub. Aside from that there really aren't many other options other than that listed by Whazoo. Get a sawzall and start cutting.

I think MUDLIGHT's is, and I know Fred Swanson has done it.
Not sure if Fred is on this board or any others.

Re: Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

I don't mean to come off as an a-hole, but, why the hell would you want to do that to a hardtop. First, is the hardtop was damaged than maybe I would see the conversion. Second, the hardtops are rare enough as it is, if you sell the hardtop and get a convertable, I'm sure you would have enough $ left over for some mods; plus you get the same result! Third, I forgot my third point, but I'm sure it wasn't that important.

On the tropica.com bbs site, there is something on there about a conversion from hardtop to softtop, but I think it was done because the hartop had rolled and was really jacked up.

Also, if you do the conversion, I would love to purchase the side glass windows that are in the hardtop, and shipping wont be too bad since we're semi-close.

Lastly, welcome to the board!

Re: Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

Since we're on the topic of converting tops, I was wondering how hard or easy, and what is involved to go from a soft top to a removable hard top.

Re: Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

The removable hardtops are bolt/clamp ons, so not much. fitting the mounting hardware to the rig is
about it.

The hardest part is finding used removables, at least for me out here on the left coast. I see them
all the time north and east. $300 seems to be the going rate usually out there.

Re: Convert Samurai hard top to convertible

My friend has an extra one that I'm going to borrow when I buy the $500 sammi that I mentioned in another post. That's the only thing other than the headgasket that is wrong with it. The soft top is so shot that the windows are duct tape.
