under drive???

why couldn't a granny gear 4 spd be fitted between the tranny and t-case to yield and under drive unit? Granted adapters
and cross members would have to be fabricated. Stick it in granny gear, t-case in 4 lo...should yield some low gearing.
Imagine a sammy with 20 gears in 2 hi or 20 gears in 4 lo.......... I think i'll have another beer now

Re: under drive???

I've recently been thinking about the exact same thing. This is something I'd like to try unless someone thinks it can't be done. One problem may be a lack of room, and a rear drive shaft that would be too short. I've got that problem solved though. My Samurai is a LWB model, and I think there's an extra foot or so to play with between the axles.

Re: under drive???

You're absolutely right Glenn, it is expensive and not worth it if one can pick up an old 4-speed for a couple hundred bucks. Sure there's costs invloved with fabrication and most certainly custom-built driveshafts, but it still would be much cheaper than Klune-V's unit. The reason most of us drive and build Samurais is for their low cost to purchase and to modify. Instead of trying to sell something all the time, why not offer some constructive advice which we all know you hold. This is one topic which I am sure you could shed some light on, knowing your background and experience over many years building these vehicles. So, what do you think Glenn, is it possible to do this mod with an old 4-speed?

Re: under drive???

Theres enough room is you really want to do it. You will probably have to move the t/c back some, custom drive lines, etc..... Don't know about the jeep tranny though. Don't mess with them much. The klune is neat, but like you, it is a ton of money. Good luck...

Re: under drive???

Why does it need to be a granny 4 speed? Any tranny you put behind the stock 5 speed would do the trick. Take the output from the stock tranny and run it thru a good cheap 3 speed in first gear and you could out walk it and not even break a sweat. A T90 tranny should be strong enuff and there cheeeeap. There also only about 8" or so long.
