Is a \'87 tranny geared better than my \'90?

From what I've read, an '87 tranny has a higher 5th gear than my '90. Based on this, should I stick with my '90 tranny if I'm running 31's with a 4:163 Crawler with stock R&P's?

The answer to your subject title is yes and no.

If you set your gears up so low that they're winding a bit high on the highway, then the 87 tranny has better gearing as it'll bring your RPM's down a hair.

If you are lacking power in 5th gear though and need to gain a bit more to make 5th gear more useful, the 88.5 tranny will work a bit better.

Thanks Glenn. That's what I thought, especially if I'll be running the bigger meats.
