Can i get the Basics on Sammies ?

hey,

i've been toying with the idea of getting a sammy as a toy-only vehicle, mostly cuz they look neat and they are fairly cheap if you shop carefully for em.... but i know nothing about them.....so i got a few ?s for your guys

1)what years came with the full steel hard tops...i like those...
2) how tough are stock trannies
3)how tough is stock t-case and what gearing?
4)how tough are stock axles what gearing, and how long will they last with 31/32/33" tires,.....roughly..i know it varies.
5)is it possible to even think of holding a highway speed with above tires? i dont trailer when i go to play
6) why are there 3 drive shafts? is it an unmated t-case?
7) is the engine pretty reliable?
8)what is stock wheel bolt pattern
9) are there any years, models, trim levels, options etc i should stay far away from??

any basic info would be great......as would any links to big time aftermarket places

thanks a bunch guys!

Re: Can i get the Basics on Sammies ?

1)what years came with the full steel hard tops...i like those...dont know exact cut off year, every one ive seen has been pre 90
2) how tough are stock trannies their pretty good
3)how tough is stock t-case and what gearing? stock axles are 373 best as i kin remember, stock t/c leave something to be desired in the gearing department. plenty of vendors offering cures for that though.
4)how tough are stock axles what gearing, and how long will they last with 31/32/33" tires,.....roughly..i know it varies. with a easy foot, you can run 33s with no prob. with a tough foot and a locker you will most likely start breaking stuff with 33s.
5)is it possible to even think of holding a highway speed with above tires? i dont trailer when i go to play YES, in my second zuk, i ran 33s, 462 axle gears, and a grs II t/c. was towing home from NC when the motor laid down in the tow rig, unloaded zuk, packed necessities into zuk and headed home. cuttin my own wind, was averaging 75mph, got up to 90 a couple of times behind a van or big rig.
6) why are there 3 drive shafts? is it an unmated t-case? yup, divorced t/c
7) is the engine pretty reliable? motors are very reliable
8)what is stock wheel bolt pattern 5 on 5.5
9) are there any years, models, trim levels, options etc i should stay far away from nope, mostly the same.

theres a great search button on here too if ya got specific ???s.
good luck man. cant go wrong in a zuk!!!

1. 86 - 94
2. tough enough for 1.3 and 1.6
3. same as 2. 4.16, 4.49. 5.8 6.0 readily available.
4. it varies, I've been running 33's for 5 years. Not one single breakage.
5. with 1.6, 4.16, and 4.62 r & p's I can go faster that you want to.
6. yes, divorced.
7. as any other. depends on the maintenance its encountered.
8. 5 on 5.5. very common.
9. No

Re: Can i get the Basics on Sammies ?

In responce to questions 3,4&5.....You can correct your
street gearing for larger tires by changing transfercase
gears and leaving the stock 3.73 ring and pinions alone.
The 4.16 gearset corrects for 30" tires,the 4.89 corrects
for 31" tires,the 5.8 for 32"tires and the 6.1 for 33's.
As you can see by the numbers all these gearsets provide
a huge reduction in low range (stock is 2.27) which is
what you want for a "play toy".The T-case as a unit is
strong enough for 33" tires, just the mounting system needs
some upgrading.
In my opinion, when used hard with lockers, the axles are
good up to 31" tires. There are some aftermarket shafts
that will give you about an extra 15% to 25% strength,
but thats it.There's a ton of vendor parts available for
Samurai's,I suggest you do some surfing before you make
any decisions.Here's a few companies:
Calmini
Spidertrax
Hawk Suzuki
North Coast Offroad
Petroworks
Trail Tough
Sky Manufacturing

Re: Can i get the Basics on Sammies ?

I get anywhere from 25 to 30 MPG on two of my stocker. The other one with the 30-9.50 on it about 23 MPG. These all have stock carburators on them. The tintop that they refer to is a factory hardtop that don't come off. You can get a after-market hardtop for the conv models. The 1.3 in them aint no race horse.
Picture of my sammies , one is a tintop.
