On a 2 barrel carb., the engine normally uses one barrel (for fuel economy reasons mainly, they do have some huge 1 barrel carbs the Predator carb comes to mind, it's a race type carb, but I digress), but when you need more power, such as to pass, you push the accelerator, and either through mechanical linkage, or engine vacuum (the only 2 ways I know of), the back (secondary) barrel also opens... This gives the engine the air/fuel mix it needs to make more power... I think that's a pretty decent basic explanation.. If you want anything clarified, let us know...
