Who has painted their engine?

Just wondering if you like it or not. I'm thinking about painting mine when I rebuild it. I've painted lots of cast iron engines, but never an aluminum one. TIA

Re: Who has painted their engine?

I saw one painted Chevy orange. I didn't think it looked too bad. I wonder if it'd be easier to clean if it were painted?

Re: Who has painted their engine?

howdy,
i just painted the valve cover and the oil pan, then the timing belt cover and some pulleys. the alum hold up pretty good, but i was worried that if i power washed the block like i do before the sammi goes into the garage, that the paint would chip and fly off.

Re: Who has painted their engine?

When I do my 3.8 v6 I'm painting the hole thing. What colour, I don't know yet. But all I know is I had a chevy half ton with the motor painted and it made it easy to tell if there was any leaks. And it looks good too.

Re: Who has painted their engine?

when i put together my gti hybrid engine i meticulously cleaned and preped the block and head. only after bead blasting, some time with a wire wheel, and a dremel with several attatchments was i able to get the outside perfect enough to paint. the color i used was FORD DARK BLUE (keeps the pistons under the hood better than those gm colors).

i will not have any pics until i get the truck out of winter storage, but it turned out great. if you do not do the proper prepping, the paint will just flake off over time and it will look like $hit.

the valve cover and oil pan were bead blasted, rust proofed, and painted with several coats of dupont gloss black.

some people say that painting an engine will increase the operating temp, but since i had also upgraded my cooling system, mine runs cooler than stock.

Re: Who has painted their engine?

What's the proper way of preparing a motor to be painted if you don't have a bead blaster?

Re: Who has painted their engine?

How about getting the block sand blasted, then anodized whatever colour you want? That might look nicer, and hold up better on the aluminum.

Re: Who has painted their engine?

Would that hold up to the heat?
