Temp. guage fluctuating

I just traded my Sami for a Tracker. Though there was alot of things wrong it the Tracker (tail light sockets rusty, no turn signals) I still think I came out pretty good. I had applied alot of what I learned from my old Sami (turnsignals and back-up switch sonmehow connected). But the problem I have (really from the start) is that the temp guage will go to the over temp (red box) when I turn the ignition on and even when running. The sensor is working fine(used an ohm meter with the sensor in hot to boiling water). Could there be a short somewhere causing this. Also, though I have turnsignals, I still don't have back-up lights.

Any help on this would be great.
Thanks,
Mac

Mac, check the grounds. They can do some crazy things when they aren't good..............

Yuppers, sounds like a classic floating/missing ground somewhere, get another one off the - battery to the firewall, and one from the engine distrib to the firewall. If they are there already, replace them with 10gauge strap.
