Clutch troubles -help!!

I recently installed a new clutch in my 87 zuki tintop. Its my first time installing anything this serious. Everything seemed correct going in. I used the clutch alignment tool, torqued all the bolts to spec, etc. The clutch pedal feels ok when pressed but it wants to go into gear when the shifter is free. Once i'm in gear the tranny gates aren't open to downshift. Basically I can mostly go up gears but not down. I thought adjustment to the clutch cable bracket and the ending clutch cable joint nut would fix this but no luck. Any ideas???

Re: Clutch troubles -help!!

It sounds to me like your clutch adjustment is not right. Probably still too much play in the pedal. Have you adjusted the cable to the specs called out in any of the books? 3/8" to 1/2" freeplay is plenty.

Also, pull the cable flange loose off the firewall and inspect the sheetmetal for cracks. My Tracker's firewall was cracked and no amount of adjusting the clutch could get it working properly. So check that out before going too much further. Good Luck!
