Timing Belt Differences lookout

SAMURAI TIMING PULLEY and BELT DIFFERENCES

There are different sets of timing pulleys and belt
configuration on the 1.3 L engine. I own a 9 / 94
with the older style belt set-up and have changed the
belt using aftermarket belts with no problems. However,
the other day I Changed the belt on my 10 / 95 Zook and
whammo. I wasn't paying much attention to detail and
slapped a new Timing Belt on....after finishing up I
found an unusual whine from the Cam Pulley area.
After removing the cover and running the engine did
I find the problem. This information has been confirmed
with a TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FROM SUZUKI
(however, they give no reason for this change).

PRIOR to 9/94 the CAM gear is Stamped Steel with SQUARE TEETH.
AFTER 9/94 the CAM gear is STEEL with ROUND teeth.

The CRANKSHAFT GEARS are Square or Round respectively.

OBVIOUSLY the TIMING BELTS ARE QUITE DIFFERENT.
The ROUNDED newer style is slightly longer than the SQUARED
older style.

I suspect that using the wrong belt might result in
stripping the teeth off the belt possibly leaving you
stranded.

The Dealer no longer supports the older style timing
systems and Aftermarket seems to be sporadic in being able
to find the never style as they don't seem to have much in the
line of listings beyond 1994 models.

Needless to say I had to use the Dealer to find a belt for
the 1995 Model.

Hope this info helps somebody.

I got my old-style (square tooth) belt from NAPA. It's made by Gates. HTH

Just curious ... do the newer Sams like yours use v belts or ribbed belts for the alternator?

I have a '94 zook and it uses the round tooth belt also. The only place I could find a replacement was to order from the dealer and it only cost double the square tooth belt.

Re: Timing Belt Differences lookout

I run a standard V Belt Configuration but larger because I run a 105 amp Gm alternator to serve two Batteries.
