Wasn't propane used as a refrigerant before flourocarbons
were? Seems like the very early refrigerators used it. But
that practice was dropped long long ago, because a few houses
blew up.

The stuff about R-12 being environmentally bad and R-134 good
is simply a Dow-Corning and political scam - so I've heard.

Dow's patents were going to run out mid 90's, then anybody
could produce it - competing with Dow.
Until then, Dow got a nice royalty from anybody in the world
that produced it. Nice if you can get it!
But they were about to lose out.

Dow invented something different enough to patent, R-134.
So they made up stories to get the greenies going, greenies
pressured the politicians to make R-12 illegal.
Between the dumb politicians that don't actually read what
they vote for (like the Homeland Security Act) and the
bribes and greenie pressure, it worked.
Now Dow has exclusive rights to all R-134 for another 50
years.

How's it feel to be thier pawn?
