Gearing for 33\'s???

Hi all,

I'm trying to help a buddy get his Sammy set up with 33's, and he is planning on going to the 1.6 FI in the near future. What the question is, what gearing would he need to be able to run 70mph down the highway with the A/C on, or is that a dream? I know that you can regear the t-case, or the R&P's, and it doesn't matter which one. I would push for the R&P's just for the fact that the truck has a lot of miles, and there is a bit more backlash on the gears in the rear axle than I would like. Also the plan is to install a spool in the rear, and a lockright in the front. Is it possible to do a twin stick in the sammy's? I have one in my truck and it is great not having to go out and lock the hubs in and out when you want to use true 4X4. How do the stock axles handle the pressure of 33's, or should he just go with toyota axles? Thanks for all of your help.

I run 33's with a 4.16 t-case and 4.62 r&p's. I can cruise at 70 if I have about 32 lbs of air in the tires. I run a very strong 1.6. There is a 2wd lo conversion that you can do to the case. And stock axles can handle 33's but it all depends on whose doing the wheeling I guess.

I did the math and 4.16's and 4.62 R&P puts the 1.6 in the sweet spot.. very close to stock RPM at highway speeds.. I used 32.8 for tire height.

On paper with stock gears on 5th 3582 RPM @ 65
In a sammy with 4.16/4.62's 3864 RPM @ 65

A 6-1 t-case, stock R&P, and 33's put you almost exactly back to stock RPM's and shift points.
