Pop Quiz...what is it?

I brought my LWB parts truck in the garage today to take look at it. When I was about to start it again I could hear the buzz of an electric pump from the back. So I went to look at what was wrong with the one on the engine and found something weird......

Any Ideas?
It's supposed to be an 1987 by the way.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

well by the sounds of it you have an external fuel pump at the back of the vehicle. take a look ot the engine size stamped on the opposite side of the engine, you never know she may have a different engine in her!

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

Certainly seems odd, the picture has no fuel pump casting on the head, but upon further inspection:

Distributor points the wrong direction

Theres no EGR valve

And its an oily mess

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

No EGR - early canadian models didn't have EGR's on them
No mech. pump casting in head - late model head??
Distributor faces wrong way - does it? looks OK to me??
Oily mess - Yes.

Probably an 87 block and manifolds with a newer (90+) cyl. head.

That's my guess.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

That's were the turbo encabulator bolts up to the reverse flow hydrometer which measures semisodal noise.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

I think someone put a EFI head on and went with an electric fuel pump.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

Yes, I was mistaken on the distributor, it is correct. Late model EFI heads have the casting for the fuel pump too, just have a blockoff plate bolted over them.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

I'd almost be willing to say that's a 1 litre motor.. The efi's do have the mech fuel pump cast, suzuki has removed the fuel pump rod and used a block off plate for the fuel pump opening on the block.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

Suzuki has two different part numbers for heads (carb VS efi). I never noticed the block off plate on my 94. Guess I need to look harder.

Re: Pop Quiz...what is it?

I also noticed on that picture, looks like that is the exhaust side, of course the fuel stuff would not be there, it that a 1.8 litre?? Note on the fuel pump block off, my 94 efi head did have a mechanical fuel pump "area" but the block off plate was not there (the fuel pump push rod (lack of a real term) nor the rod thinggie.. Seems that was the only difference..
