Need advice - won\'t pass CA smog test

Got the notice for a Test Only smog check, yikes. Got it on the dyno yesterday and asked the tech to do a pretest. It didn't pass. Hydrocarbons and NOX too high.

The tech said could be EGR, secondary ignition, catalytic converter, or timing.

I checked EGR, OK, I checked timing, OK. I checked seondary ignition, have new coil, plugs, cap, rotor, and wires - OK. Did a comporession check, OK. I still have a VERY slight misfire on all cylinders at all speeds.

What have I overlooked? I adjusted the valves only a few thousand miles ago if that. If I replace the cat will it pass?

ALL suggestions are appreciated. Gotta get running for Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks,

Roger

Some things I've learned are to have your cat burning hot right before they test it. I also put in premium gas with octane boost. Or you can head to your local race shop that sells race gas

I had idled the car until up to operating temp just before it went on the dyno. I'm running the tank dry now and will follow your advice.

Thanks,

Roger

Had the same problem. Sometimes the cat is unsalvagable. I had to replace mine. Also have your carb. checked and dialed in correctly. That's the primary smog system on a Sammi. Lastly when you set your valves and timing, don't trust the marks on the pulley; use the marks on the flywheel. It worked for me, Good luck.

If everything else is good do the cat. When I first bought it, mine consistantly failed
(barely) no mater what I did til I did the cat. The old cat turned out to be an empty shell.
Hmmmm, I wonder how that could have happened?

Re: Need advice - won\'t pass CA smog test

a honest smog teck told me the samurais are notorious for burning out cats i ended up pulling mine apart and it was a shell also dont let it idle till up to temp i was told that loads up the cat exhaust because at an idle the cat doesnt burn off the Hydrocarbons as well as it does at some rpm when i tested mine i took it in and hed the carb tuned (weber) put in the new cat and took it to another smog shop for the test got there and was told it would be half an hour so i drove it down the road and came back by then he was ready he hooked it up and was puzzled at why it was running so clean (probably the new cat, weber, and non functional egr)the egr was there but the bimetalic switch didnt work right

Re: Need advice - won\'t pass CA smog test

Thanks to all for the replies.

I decided to get the cat done (+ new oversize freeflow muffler and pipes - don't tell my wife). I asked the shop to save the cat for me. I'll do an autopsy on the cat to see what condition it was in (fingers crossed). I'll make it into a test pipe and run the pipe off-road to save the cat for on-road. Anyone have thoughts about the primary ignition circuit as the possible culprit?

Roger

Put in a couple of bottles of rubbing alcahal. All the aditives you get are manily just that and it is also what the goverment mandates in areas where they are trying to get the polution down. From what I understand it gives you a more compleat burn therefor a cleaner one!!
