Anyone modifyed a pitman arm B4?

The pitman arm on my Zook steering box isn't long enough to steer my Zook full left & full right with the Yota axles. SO,...I was thinking of pulling the pitman arm off, cutting it in half on a chop saw, grinding the two halves to a point at the end where it was cut, cut off a piece of 1"x1-1/2" solid square stock, weld the piece of steel between the two pieces.
Anyone else ever done this or a homemade drop pitman arm? This is on a 80% off road rig BTW.

Re: Anyone modifyed a pitman arm B4?

If you going to make or modify a steering arm do it similar to the calmini arm Pug posted.
BTW many states and provences forbid any welded steering components, and with pretty good reason.

I don't reomend welding 3 pieces like you were suggesting at all. Not even by a "professional" welder,
(Whatever that might mean, I've seen some pretty bad "pro" welders...)

Rockrat's arm looks to be a full lap, so thats not too bad if the welds are done properly.

Not that I'd advise anyone to do it but......

I've welded a number of steering components, no breaks so far but It's MIGHTY dicey at best.

Re: Anyone modifyed a pitman arm B4?

Wyld_Bill,
I make custom drop pittman arms all the time for the Tracker/Kick power steering systems since there is not one available. Just take a full size Dodge or Ford pittman arm and lop off the ends with a chop saw. Then weld the Tracker pittman arm ends on. I have built several of them for people we all know.....Whazoo (Robert) and ATV71 (Aaron Kaklamanos)...Aaron even rolled his rig and it held up beautifully. I do not recommend trying this unless you are an experianced welder.

IFS Toy arm is 6" center to center ands drops about 2.5"

I have an IFS arm that was modified to accept Toy tie rod end.

Tracker one is flat and 5" center to center.
