soft top bodt structure question - stupid!

HI..this is a genuinely stupid question so if things like this offend you, please just read something else.

I am getting a soft top body in a while to change over from my hardtop. I have spent very little time around soft top samis..at least not crawling around inside and over them looking at how they are put together.

My question is about the targa bar and the things that go from the targa to the windshield. These things are obviously removable, since i have seen lots of samis without them, but my question is "how easy is it to take them off (the targa and the other bars)" and furthermore: "if I take them off, can I easily put them back on?" I guess I want to know if they are welded in place or bolted or what.

To me, a convertible has nothing sticking up above the body except a windsheild (and a roll bar, sometimes). I'd like to be able to take the doors off and not have all kinds of superstructure around me, at least until I put in a responsible rollcage.

thanks for your patience.

Heat and a impact screw driver will remove the whole thing. Me, Max, my Daughter, and Glenn's Son removed the entire thing without much problems. Jim

You meant to say, "I will be responsible and put in a rollcage BEFORE I take off all the superstructure around me.", right?

Yes, it comes off rather easy. ANd you will want if off when you install a roll cage. But please never let me her of you wheeling around with all that fluff off or I'll drive up there and smack you. While it might not seem like much, it's all the protection you have.

Funny I got that same talk when I was planning on putting in a windshield fold down kit. Thanks Tim. Jim

As metioned, its all bolted in, usually with those silly phillips head screws so you will need an impact.
Wire(s) going to the cabin light are inside the targa, but it has a disconect.

Ditto what Tim said about cages and head protection!

I probably wouldnt do much wheeling with it off, but I sure as hell would drive on the street without it on!! I drove plenty of convertibles without rollcages when I was growing up, frequently at speeds well in excess of 100 mph. I remember a few times going down a highway at about 75 in my 68 dart gts340 with a friend driving next to me in a 1960 chevy panel truck. We were having fun with our friends diving out of the window of the panel truck into my open convertible. And yes, we were sober at the time.

So Im not going to be driving over any crazy angles offroad and risking rolling over with the thing all naked, but the street is another story, in my book. Perhaps thats insane to you, but I guess I'm something of a fatalist. Heck, if I could save money in a new car by deleting the airbags I would do it.

Re: soft top bodt structure question - stupid!

If you hate those nasty little bars overhead and actually manage to roll your Samurai on the open road, you (or your favorite ER physician) will be picking windshield out of your lacerated noggin for a long time!

Back to the question... The bars are bolted in place. besides giving you some protection from getting hit in the face by the top of the windshield in a rollover, they support the soft-top overhead. They are not designed to disassemble easily, so I would plan on figuring out some sort of "quick release" method of attaching and detaching them.

Personally, I would replace them with a full rollcage if I didn't like those weenie bars overhead...

I could be wrong, but it seems like you would need something to support the windsheild and stop it from landing in your lap at high speeds.

Re: soft top bodt structure question - stupid!

HI Ack..

I know that. Like I said, I drove lots of convertibles without rollcages really really fast for years and years. I'm not dead. I don;t drive my samurai really really fast. Heck..it doesnt even GO really really fast!! I even avoid driving it on the highway.

That said, I plan to put in a full rollcage, covering even the back part where my kidz will sit. Even after thats in, I would like to be able to replace the targa and the door bars so as to use a proper softtop for things like driving in the winter.

II really just wanted to know if those things are glued in there or welded or can be removed without taking a whole afternoon to do it.

thanks,

~daxe
