air cleaner options for sami/pony

Hey y'all,

I just put a pony carb on my samurai. The simplicity of the carb points out the complexity of the air cleaner "system" to me. i remember when you could just go buy a little chrome air cleaner ofr your carb and gain 50-70 extra horsepower

What can I replace this contraption with that is a bit simpler and/or more elegant? I dont care if I have to cut a hole in the hood to clear it. It does need to be able to deal with the frigid winters here in the northeast, tho.

Re: air cleaner options for sami/pony

I can post a pic of mine for you tomorrow if you want. Mine worked out really well using the stock air cleaner. You know how the choke pull-off hits the stock air cleaner, well I just drilled a new hole on the outside screw to tilt the choke pull-off down a bit then as long as you have access to a welder you just have to make the choke pull-off arm a little longer.

Re: air cleaner options for sami/pony

HI Danny,

I took that bracket off, too. Is it possible you have a candain market samurai? Since you're in Canada it doesnt seem like too much of a stretch

The pony mounts 180 degrees (throttle on rear) on a candian spec sammy if I am not mistaken. That means the throttle return gizmo is on the other side of the carb and doesnt end up under the neck of the airbowl. That's what was preventing mine from seating after I took off that bracket and ball-peened it a little bit to clear that other thing on the opposite side.

and none of that makes the "airbowl into rubber hose into aircleaner into plastic thing with a valve into one hose that runs along the passengerside fenderwell and another hose that runs across the front of the engine to the heat hing on the exhaust manifold" any simpler.

Re: air cleaner options for sami/pony

I didn't have any problems with the air cleaner either and mine
Isn't a canuk. Mine is mounted with the trottle cable forward
and the float in back, I pulled the tab and maybe dented it a little but not a major mod I I remember right. Daxe I think I need to take a look at what you are doing to get an idea of the problem, and help you finish tuning it. Sat Tim and I are supposed to be going to the meeting in NH but I will be around Sun And can stop up. (I am allways dropping off Als
friend up the street anyway.)

Re: air cleaner options for sami/pony

I have the same problem as you Daxe. My stock air cleaner works, but not very well. It does not seal completely around the top of the carb. It would be nice to find an air cleaner that was simple and small, kinda like the ones used on the Webers. Am I right in assuming that the air cleaners off of the Pony can not be fitted to the Zuk? Reckon what they look like.

Perhaps folks are misunderstanding me. My air cleaner is mounted very nicely and seals perfectly well. I dented it a little to clear the thing on the front drivers side and have an O-rirg around the neck of the carb that the air bowl seats against. The contraption that returns it slowly to idle is what I removed because it was bumping the bottom of the airbowl assembly and preventing it from seating fully.

My problem with the air cleaner is that its ugly and seems overly complicated, not that it doesnt fit or work.

I will keep poking away at tuning it myself in the meantime.

That would be nice of you. Just let me know when yo might want to stop by so I can be sure to be here.

Re: air cleaner options for sami/pony

Well You can use the snoot (adapter etc) and put a K+N style
filter on it. Autozone has these BoyRacer tm airfilters in groovy colors. I think they would fit on the end of the
stock adapter. you could dump the stock airbox then.
But it will not be waterproof. I am an old Dirtbike guy
and don't like not sucking water in my engines. (Been there done that) I'll get ahold of you about this weekend.
