Sidekick: Straight axle -VS- 3 inch Calmini susp.

I own a 93 Sidekick that at this point is bone stock.I recently bought a 3 inch body lift but have not installed yet. I'm thinking of going up to 32's. What I need here is Pros and Cons of buying a 3 inch Calmini susp. kit or doing a straight axle conversion. This is my daily driver and don't have lots of money to sink into it.I also want something that will handle well on and off road. if you are willing to do a little remodeling of your truck, I'de say, put the body lift on, and then cut the fenders to clear those 32's. Going to solid Axle is a lot of work and/or money, but if you know how to weld or someone who does cheap, it might be a good idea because you'll save all the labor.

Well I know someone who did the fender cutting thing and I think it looks like S*#T! The front fenders are not that bad to do but the rears are double wall I guess and think you need to weld those back together after cutting. So even thou it's cheap it's not the way I wanna go.Has seen many lifted without cutting up the fenders. But thanks for the input anyway. Well, they SAY you can run 32 X 9.50's under the full Calmini 6"... I have 31 X 10.50's under my Calmini 6" lift, and had to hammer back the front driver's side fender opening. No problems in the rear, though. I have no idea what a SAS conversion is gonna cost you. You'll actually get more front clearance out of the IFS, than with SAS, so that's something to consider.

OK...well I know of two people who have the Calmini 3 inch susp. kit. I have heard from one that the axle is the weak spot. Have you ever had any trouble with an axle or anything else with the Calmini 3 inch susp. kit ??? I can see cutting back the front fenders.I have even heard of one cutting/moving floorboards back. This is a truck that will be a daily driver and my trail truck also. It's not something I'm going to take out and beat on all the time. I dunno.. I ran my Geo with 31's and a 3" Calmini body lift with a ProComp 2.5" suspension. I also had to do some fender mods, but only on the inside lip behind the exterior sheet metal. Persoanlly I would go SAS and skip the body lift. It's a tough install to do anyway. I am running a samurai now and if I had to do it over, I would have kept my Geo and went SAS with toyota axles and Wrangler springs, it's probably mot as much work as one might think. Just installing the body lift is an all day affair. Brian (aka Madsidekick) I belive is goina SAS in his after blowing up a few front axles in his kick.

Well I went 4wheeling with Brian and the guys last saturday for the first time. He told me the body lift can be done in no time at all. I was also told that you can now buy stronger axles. So I guess you have the pros and cons either way.I know he is going with the straight axle and a vortex. I don't wanna get that much into mine.(unless I win the lottery)All I want is a nice daily driver/ trail ride.Can't wait to see how Brians straight axle conversion comes out.Has anyone else done a straight axle on a Sidekick that you know of ? If I could get away with buying stronger axles and the 3 inch susp. then thats what I'd do.As far as the bodylift,thats going in for sure. If it is your daily driver, on road manners are as important as off, and you have never done anything like this before, I'd say stick with the IFS and Calmini kit.

Your rig is likely to be down for quite a while doing the SAS and if you get a lot of professional help it will be $$$.

Now if it were mostly a trail rig and you could take your time learning and scavanging for cheap parts, SAS all the way, IMHO. [img]images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

Well I'll probably go with the IFS Calmini 3 inch susp. kit. Like you said,if this was going to be a full blown trail rig I would go for the straight axle ,full locked,vortex,monster tires.........you get the idea. But it's not so I'll stay with the IFS till I will the lottery. I have also been told that you can go with stronger axles.I know Calmini now makes a stronger axkle housing,"THE ANVIL", thats not the axles.Was told a 26 spline axle from an newer sidekick works better. What do you want to do with it? thats what you really need to ask. If you stay IFS and start to get in the big rocks you will break the IFS parts. Not If , when. If you just run easy trails
and stay with 31's then it may last longer.
Me I am loosing the stock diffs and installing toyota axles and custom coil suspension. But I can do all the work myself.
