need advice

What winch would you reccomend for a trail based sami on 235-75-15's? I stay away from the rocks but go for the mud holes. I was looking at the Super Winch S4500, Cause I can buy it new for under $400.00
Any input? Good Bad Ugly?

Re: need advice

Samurais are light, but myself and friends with Zuks have all roasted winches at or under 6000lb. We all use 8k winches now. Buying a low rated winch the first time around didn't save me much money when I had to pick up the beefier one after it died.

YMMV

Re: need advice

I agree, 8K winches are very affordable these days. I would't consider anything smaller.

Re: need advice

I've had a Ramsey 5K quick mount for a while and been real happy. However with the way prices have gone
if I were to buy today, 8K unit is the only way and the faster the better

Re: need advice

8K is the only way to go.
You will burn out anything smaller.
I would rather spend the $600.00 once , than spend 4 or 500 on a smaller winch, then have to buy a bigger one after that one burns out.

Re: need advice

i have an m8000 and there hasn't been anything i haven't been able to do with it. invest in a snatch block for extracting trucks with 44's and an extra tow strap to anchor with. if you are rally serious about getting a winch i have a friend that has a m8000 for sale w/roller fairlead for like 500 bucks. he bought it for his full size and only used it a couple of times and decided to go with a 12000 lb winch. hope this helps!

Re: need advice

I don't know if this still holds true or not...but about two years back, while wheeling a fellow had a Ramsey 8000 on his zuk, he was winching someone up and around a huge rock, and his gear teeth sheared off, they were made of a heavy plastic (like injection molding) instead of metal. The weight was too much i suppose, poor guy said he had only used it 3 or 4 times. I shy away from wanting that brand for this reason. I do not know if they still make the winch with the same guts or not. Just a thought to keep in mind.

Re: need advice

i have a ramsey 5000 on a reciever mount it is ok i have still stalled it in snow (tring to pull myself sideways back up on the road) i have a doubler pulley for it as well havent used it yet but to be fair i have also stalled a 8000 warn spur drive in the snow as well he was tring to pull me out another time i would rather have the 8000 as well i could trade my 5000 (like new ) for a old warn 8000 spur drive but i realy cant reciever mount it and it is heavy and i barely use the 5000 i have used 2 times now in two and a half years

Re: need advice

I picked up a Warn 5000 for $150.
Couldn't pass it up.
But if I was buying a new one I would lean towards a 9-9500.
I havn't used my 5000 for the sami, but I pulled XJ's and 4 Runners with it
