HELP!!! Strange noises

While at Zuwharrie I heard a strange clunking in my drivetrain. I got home and removed my reardriveshaft to try and test and elminate areas of the noise. Now in 4WD Hi with the rear dr shaft out the GRS-II sounds like it's trying to kick out a gear when I let off the gas like a starter being bench tested.
Is this the norm for a less than 18 month old GRS-II???

Re: HELP!!! Strange noises

Dogo,
yeah...
I just checked my rear pinion flange too and I could just about twist it 1/4-1/2 a turn before it locks with the park break on. I hope i don't have to replace both. It's also a Hawk hybrid rear end w/5.12-1 and a lockrite.

Thanks,
Blake

Re: HELP!!! Strange noises

A lockrite needs almost half a turn of free play to make them work properly. That ratcheting sound may be from a bad pin or spring set in the locker itself .

Re: HELP!!! Strange noises

I forget how to explain it, but it has something to do with, one part wanting to move faster then another, so it speeds up and slows down, making a ratcheting clicking as it bangs teeth. With the locker, its not going to "give" where in an open diff the spider gears would compensate for the speed difference

Re: HELP!!! Strange noises

Right now my zook goes clunk clunk, chachunk when the transfer case is in neutral and I'm in 3~5th gear at idle...
When I've got my new engine ready, I'll be investigating that problem. I'm going to change the intermediate shaft u-joints so that may be a/the problem you have... It'll be a while before I have anything.
