whining noise coming from trans

i just bought a 88 sammi for an off road rig and it has got a whining or high pitched noise that is coming from the trans or clutch. the noise is not there when i push on the clutch, but when i let it out the noise starts and it gets louder as the rpm goes up. does anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Try changing the gear oil and using synthetic. If that doesn't work, either rebuild it or exchange it for a rebuilt one. HTH

Mine is doing the came, now it's got a slight clciky noise that goes with RPM. I think it's time for a new/rebuilt tranny but if the whine isn't too bad then don't worry about it. Sammies always have somewhat noisy trannies and very little insualation if any so you hear it.

Re: whining noise coming from trans

It sounds to me like it could be your throw out bearing. If the noise goes away when the clutch is depressed and it returns when you release the pedal. Then the first thing I would look at is the throw out bearing. Second would be the clutch disc itself. Could have a very loose spring in the clutch pack. Just my thoughts. Hope this helps. Either way it looks like the tranny needs to come out if the noise gets to be too much to bear.

Re: whining noise coming from trans

Make certain that the throwout bearing isn't riding on the clutch cover all the time . There should be about 1/2" of free play in the release arm on the bell housing....
