where to get a lighted license plate bracket?

Howdy Howdy Howdy

I took that infernal tow bar thing off my Samurai yesterday since I got the cool Hardcore4x4 gas tank skid and no longer need it. (plus I wanted to be able to see the skid plate). It went typically well, I snapped off two of the four big bolts that hold it on and couldn't get anything on the nut at the top of the other two, which just kind of crumbled/rounded off. Vise grips wouldn't do it, nut splitter no-go, so I dremeled the nuts to oblivion and have the metal splinters to prove it. Then I tried to get thoselittle tiny plates off the ends and got exactly one of the upper bolts out on either side, but the heads rounded off on the other two upper ones (even with 6 point socket). No big deal..I'll take off the lower two instead. One broke off on either side and the back one rounded off there, too. *sigh* More grinding and chiseling and invisible metal splinters (scratch scratch) and I finally got it off. Whew.

Since tht was part of my license plate mount, I had to drill some holes in the crossbar above the fuel tank to hang the plate, but it may be too far up and in and could draw attention from law enforcement types. You can't really see the registration expiration staicker in the upper right corner anymore. At least the light I put there still shines on it (required in MAssachusetts)

I want to move the plate up to be either on my back door (its a hardtop) to the left of the spare or perhaps into the middle of the spare. My problem is the light. I can get the wires up there for power without much trouble, but I'd like a reasonably tidy plate bracket with some integral lighting.

After all this bluster, all I want to know is if anyone knows where I would buy something like that. I haven't been able to find anything like that anyplace I have looked. Just a simple standard plate bracket with lights built in to shine on the plate is what I need, unless someone has a better idea.

thanks,

~daxe

Re: where to get a lighted license plate bracket?

Summit carries a few brands of the plates with built in lights around $25. You might check the the local auto yards and check out the back ends of some of the older small cars which had lights bolted to the trunk lids which would make a nice setup and maybe cheaper.

Re: where to get a lighted license plate bracket?

Something that works pretty well is taking a NEON (yes NEON!) licence plate frame with white NEON in it and black out all of the sides except for inside so it shines on the licence plate only. These NEON licence plate frames are available pretty cheap at most any Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Best Buy, Pep Boys and a few other placecs for about $20. In the state of Virginia this is legal as long as you use white NEON instead of the colored ones.
Just an idea.

Crow got his at a junk yard. Not sure what vehicle though. I believe autozone has them or try a boat store. Jim

Re: where to get a lighted license plate bracket?

I just won a box load of them off ebay, I only need one, so I'm going to try to sell the rest of them off once they get here. They are plastic, but look likr they'll do the trick. I was going to offer them up here on the board for $10 each, shipped to your door. Any takers?

Crow also fabbed up a quick disconnect setup so he wouldn't have to unwire / unhook everything just in case he needed access to his spare - PM him for more info........it is really trick and works nice

Smittybilt used to have a pretty nice one for around $20, Pretty much the same thing as the other guy had for $10, I would say quit screwing around and buy one from him
