Well... the bigger the better. I think a good rule of thumb is figure the minimum space you need and then double it and hope you have enough. Garages are like pay checks. Your cost of living expands to match the available income just like storage expands to match the available storage space.

If you are a woodworker, better plan on a space for wood storage, a space for woodworking and a clean space for finishing. If you burn fire wood, plan on a space for fire wood storage. If you do body work, plan for that, etc., etc., etc. Got to have a space for your "office" too with refrigerator, microwave and big screen TV. Better plumb in a toilet. Second floor apartment for visiting children/grandchildren would probably round it out.

Whatever you do, it won't be enough.

I have 2 big garages, 1800+ sq feet, still I'm
thinking of building another one, or two, or -.

The garages themselves are not the major cost.
Filling them with more toys is!

I have a 30x30 and after you get all the Kids outside toys wifes car and planting stuff I want more space. 40x40 would be perfect for what I do. I shouldn't complain its plumed and I have water, cable, phone 9'.6" ceilings, dbl 8'x9' doors and heat.

I have one of those barns (minus the winch), and I am thinking of putting up a metal building, you know, when I get some money. The PITA comes when there is 187 years worth of old hay underneath, it's been drying for that length of time, and it's attached to the house, so welding/cutting in the barn is a no-no.

The good news is I can fit 8 jeeps (or 9 Zuks) inside, all with their own workspace.

What farther said. Plan it tall and loft storage will add room for the stuff your wife wants
to keep forever... Save the floor space for working in. I have a 20x 24 double garage and
NO cars fit in. Only the race car ever lived in their, before I added all the wood working tools.

I really need a 3 car 24 x 30 in ADDITION to what I have now.

Re: whats a good size for a garage?

Ya'll just making me sick! I've got a 12X24 workshop, (not a garage) that's pretty handy for working in. But I'm installing the mottoe in my Cherokee right now on the driveway slab! Its cold, windy & dark early.

Maybe next year... I'm aiming for a 3 car garage, 2 wide in front and tapering to a single wide at the rear. Yard geography dictates. The single bay at the back will be work space and eventually get a lift to. I'm tired of laying on my back all the time!

howdy,
my buddy had a garage bult that was 60' x 70'. it cost about $2000 for the building, and $600 for the cement. it was built by PDQ Barns Company. it's a poll garage. he is now putting in some wooden wall with insalation.
