slow starting

Well after a good day of beating my back on rocks, The zook began to start slow, almost like the battery was dead. I got it home and messed around with the ground wire, Where does your ground hook up,is it grounding to the engine or the frame? and what is the ground wire that goes right next to the thermostat? Now it starts fine but I was wondering if any of you have had this problem.
