Damn Hitech Retreads and F*ing Samurai!

I'll NEVER again put another set of these tires on anything I drive! Today, while doing 80mph on the highway, without any warning, the front tread seperated (like the semi tires do) and blew out. I did everthing I could do to keep the truck on the road. Luckily, no one was near as I shot through the median strip and came to a stop. Well, I got the tire swapped with the spare, headed down the road and noticed my brakes were tight when I first pushed the pedal. I pumped the tires and the pedal went right to the floor! I got out and looked for the problem. Both my rear brakes blew and fluid was coming out from the drums! I had to drive about 60 miles with little to no brakes (mostly E-brake pulling). Needless to say, I'm frazzled.

Re: Damn Hitech Retreads and F*ing Samurai!

I had a set of retreads once, backed the old Dodge out of the tire shop, dropped it in gear and spun both treads right off . This is why Semi's never use retreads on the steer axle....

I was seriously looking at maybe a set of those "babies", but maybe I should rethink it.

Hey Zuk! What'cha been up too? Thanks for your concerns. I'm OK but I threw my back out when I was in that "Oh Chit!" mode as I slid through the grass. I'll be OK in a few days. Rob gave me some good dope to take care of things. THANKS ROB!

Glad your OK Capn, But I do have to say, you get what you pay for. Retreads are great for low speed off road stuff, I could never trust 'em on the highway.

Re: Damn Hitech Retreads and F*ing Samurai!

I have heard conflicting reports on those tires...SOme good, and some REALLY bad like yours...For the little amount of $$ difference ther is bewtween those and General M/T tires from 4x4partswarehouse.com, I dont see the benefit in taking the chance...I got a set of 33's on rims, mounted, balanced and shipped for like $750...They have been GREAT tires...Tom

on the weasel when I was towing it back from the melt. I ran over
something and it peeled the thread right off. And Going 80 in a sami?
You Crazy man! (Just pulling your leg.) Hope your back feels better soon.

Re: Damn Hitech Retreads and F*ing Samurai!

Thanks Tim,

I got all the parts I needed from Rob last night. I just pulled the rear shafts and replaced them with new shafts with good brakes. It was easier to do that than it would be to rebuild the brakes. I had everything swapped out AND the brake lines bled within an hour. She's back on the road. Now it's time to fine me some cheap, used tires.
