3rd member gear ?s.

howdy,
i want to put r&ps in but i don't know what to go with. i run 33" and i'm thinking of 5.38s but i can get sammi r&ps cheaper than sidekick r&p because i would not have to buy the sleeve. also my buddy works for a dealer and i can get a discount on parts. so what do you all think?

Re: 3rd member gear ?s.

EDITS: OK edit for 88.5 5th gear...

Hard to say without the other gear specs besides tire Dia, what year? (5th is diff pre and post 88.5) stock xfer, or grs something? Are you after a street/trail ocmpromise' of a trail rig only?

A stock 86-88 would turn 60 @4000 in 5th and 69 in 5th.

your tires in that rig would turn 75 in 4th and forget 5th (86!) unless you have a very big motor swaped in.

5:38's would bring that down to 52 and 60

5.12's would be 54 and 68, I dont know what the 5.38's come from, 5.12's and 4.62's are tracker/kick auto and stick.

4:62's would go 60 and 70

Other than having to pull bigger tires, the gearing is basically back to stock with 5.12's. Of course you don't gain any trail gear, but thats where the grs xfers shine.

A grs1 (1.581/4.16) would get you about 1/2 way between (67 and 77) and much better crawl gears.

grs2 (1.62/4.89) would get you to 63 and 73, (Near stock) and even better crawl.

Re: 3rd member gear ?s.

FOr the cost of ring and pinions i would just buy the 4.1 gears for 400.. then you have great low range gears and some nice highway gears almost corrected for the 33's Plus your far more likely to destroy the 3rd members in a zuke before the t-case so wiegh up the differencees......
