Hobby or Sport?

Hey everyone, I just want your opinion on this. I know some people think of it differently. But, would you consider off-roading (in any form) a sport, or just a hobby? I feel that it is a sport. We all take it seriously, and always work on things to improve our performance. There is a fan base too. I mean, look at some kid's faces when you drive past them in your big ole' rig. They think it is the coolest thing on earth. And also, people ("fans") enjoy just watching it and reading about it even if they don't do it themselves. So my personal opinion is that it really is a sport. What do you guys think?

Re: Hobby or Sport?

Both,

If you play softball on a company team, its just a hobby, but your playing a sport.

The way I look at it is this. If it provides your source of income, its not a hobby. But it is a sport regardless, just different levels of participation.

Re: Hobby or Sport?

Sport.

A sport indicates some level of competition. Scores, points, or a personal challenge to achieve. Even working on 'em is part of the sport. Ask any racer! They spent 100X or more hours in the garage compared to actual activity. Rock climbing? Mostly training. Bikes? Training. Almost any sport is more prep than activity.

Ramp scores, the challenge of a trail, or Baha. It's all the challenge of competition, personal, against the trail, or each other.

Re: Hobby or Sport?

I think its both.

I also call it an addiction and a therapy, for those that don't understand they seem to call it a waste of time and money.

I guess the proper term might be a "motor sport".

Re: Hobby or Sport?

Its a hobby that requires skill.
I always consider a sport an activity that requires some athletic effort. You know running, jumping, swinging. I know someone will say that they run up and down hills and it takes strength to steer a locked up Samurai, but it is not the same.
