Off-road in Stanislaus National Forest
Just returned from vacation, part of which was spent in the high country off Cal Hwy 4 in the SNF. WOW! The scenery was magnificent. Wildflowers, waterfalls, streams, rivers, trees, rocks and snow. We managed to work in a day of wheeling the forest roads. A ton of fun and I got to try out my new Petroworks clutch in fine style.
About 9 miles in we came across an old hunting cabin in a meadow surrounded by aspen trees. Inside we found that the cabin was cared for by a local off-road club under an adopt-a-cabin program. We tried the 4X-only route out but encountered a patch of snow carved up by other, better equipped 4X's. Because we were traveling solo and with the kids we made the tough decision to return to camp the same way. Too bad, we were way up and the views were only getting better and better. We'll try again soon.
As far as the clutch goes it worked well. I'm still getting used to releasing it into 1st gear in 4-low (I still jerk the truck a bit). It held very well under the conditions we encountered, including some steep starts from a dead stop.
I met a fellow Zuk owner in the campground from San Bruno. He was quite knowledgeable about the local trails and provided us with some guidance as to which points would make a good day trip. He makes a part time income selling used Zuk parts. For those of you in Central and Northern Cal he might be helpful. He says he's got about 4 Zuks in parts ready to sell. If you're interested send me a PM and I'll forward his number.
If you want more info on the clutch or the area we traveled, send me a PM.
