destroyed ring-gear

last saturday i destroyed my rear ring-gear. it was a front one out of a kick. dont know how this can happen, i do no rockcrawling, only mud, and i drive always careful with the 33x12.5....

what i donot understand who this can happen. i dont think that i did a mistake on assembling because it lasted 3 years. could it have something todo with the rocklobster gears (more stress?) or with the drive-shafts?
i have lots of vibration at highway speed with my SPOA and front 1.5" CJ-lift-springs up rear.

Re: destroyed ring-gear

Did you use a spacer to ensure that there was enough bearing pre-load? What did the test pattern look like when you installed them?

Re: destroyed ring-gear

Who wet up the gears for you?
Why would you drive it with 'LOTS' of vibration?
Did this Damage happen at one time, or did you just decide to have a look?

Re: destroyed ring-gear

i got the gears from a front kick. i did all the installation. and it worked for 3 years.

the vibrations are from the drive-shafts. before i installed the front cjs in the rear there were no vibrations.

i was driving in the mud, no problem. when i put in the 2wd on road i noticed a noice in the back. stopped and looked around but couldnt see anythig. thought it is some mud in the breaks or wheels. after about 20m the noice got louder. so i stopped again. checked everything, especially the drive-shafts, but they seemed ok. after another 20m or so there was a terrible noise... this was the point when i decided not to drive any more...

yesterday at home i opened the diff and looked at the oil. there was lots of metall in the oil. so i knew that there was a problem inside... opened it and then i saw the damage...

i just called a parts guy and tomorrow i will get a rear kick axle. i am going to build my own hybrid axle which will hopefully last longer.

Re: destroyed ring-gear

do you have enough backspace on your rims with those 12.50s? possibly caught a tire lug on your spring?

Re: destroyed ring-gear

the testpattern looked perfect.
i didnt need a space, cause i got the complete front kick diff. i took out the spacer from the kick diff. worked perfect... at least for 3 years.

Re: destroyed ring-gear

what can do you mean? i just swapped the ring and pinion.
is there something i have forgotten? but why worked it perfectly the last 3 years, over 20.000km(!)
hightway and offroad...

on installation i saw that the spacer is diffrent to the one of the kick so i also swapped the spacer.
yes it could look sloppy to you. it was the first time i did it. and i am not a mechanic, i studied computer science. anyway it was fun playing with the elements *gg*
but if it was so sloppy why did it work for the last 3 years without a problem?
