Dumb ? Driveshaft measurments

What is the proper way to measure for a drive shaft? I know measure from flange to flange to get the length, but what I don't know is how far the slip should sit in the yoke when the driveshaft is at rest. I know if it is in there too far it can bottom out and that is bad. Any help is appreciated.

your correct "measure from flange to flange to get the length"......that is all any driveshaft maker needs to know, they build them so the spline is centered in the female section......thus giving as much up travel as down travel......

any questions?

So Dave when a Sumo is on a S/R YJ front the splines are half way?
Wouldn't you tend to have more droop then compression?
I'm haviing something made up here and I was wondering the same thing.....
